Hello everyone! I've taken a few months off! Christmas time was so busy, and then Spring Break was here before I knew it. So, here's what's been going on: We survived the Oregon State Writing Test. Almost the whole class passed! I was so proud of them! Quite a few students participated in the Battle of the Book Contest. Amie's team won 4th place. It was so exciting! As we're heading towards the end of the year, we have several field trips coming up. April 24--Heritage Station, Pendleton April 26--Earth Day Field Trip May --Play June 11--Pendleton Aquatic Center (Behavior Party) Speeches are coming soon. Please practice with your child at home as much as possible. Remember, it needs to be a "How to do" something speech, and it needs to be at least 3 minutes in length. It was wonderful seeing so many parents at conferences. Thank you so much for taking the time to come! Well, I promise to keep you all up to date. Until next time...
This week was very busy with our Christmas Concert! The students did a wonderful job! They were well behaved through the whole thing, and sang their hearts out. I was SO proud of them and all their hard work. Ms. Reel is such a dedicated music teacher. I hope you all enjoyed the concert as well. We are SO EXCITED about our Secret Santa Party! We had a BLAST watching each student open his or her gift! We also made ice cream cone Christmas trees. We ate LOTS too! It was a wonderful party. Thank you to ALL parents who brought gifts and treats! We were able to do a little work on the Tablet PCs with our graphing activity. They are fun to use, and the finished product will be enjoyable to look at. Since I can only check them out once a week, it will take us awhile to complete the project. We are being "Rock Detectives" in Mrs. Keyser's class for Science. We won't have any spelling words the first week we are back, since there are only 3 days of school. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas Break! See you next year!
Last Monday and Tuesday we finished up our Pilgrim Simulation. All four groups did better than the Pilgrims. They built more homes, planted more crops, made peace with the Indians, and traded beads and trinkets for fur to pay off the merchants back in England. They scored extremely well on their logs, which meant they were listening and remembering all they learned about the Pilgrims, and the Four Square Writing Method as well. This week we earned our behavior party! We watch the movie "Cars" and had ice cream. We had to earn 70 behavior points. Npw we're on to 80 points! We're still working on the geography of Oregon in Mr. Emmons' room. We've been learning a lot, and Mr. Emmons has been impressed with the quality of work we've turned in. The fourth grade is having a contest to see which class can bring in the most canned food for the school-wide canned food drivel. The winning class earns a popcorn party. Congratulations to our November Student of the Month, Christopher! We are using the Tablet PC's next week to do a graphing activity. We've been learning about graphs in math, and we're going to display different kinds of graphs in a Power Point presentation. The Tablet PCs are smaller than laptops. You can turn the top around, lay it flat, and write on it with a special pen. My math class has been using them. I'm excited to have my whole class enjoy them. Next week we'll be drawing names for Secret Santa. I'll be sending a note home explaining our Christmas party. Excel 11 is due Tuesday, December 5. Be looking for Excel 12 the next day. Thank you for all your help and support! Corinne Funderburk

What a fun week we've had with our Pilgrim unit! This week, we built more homes and planted more crops than the Pilgrims had. We made a peace treaty with the Indians, as well as traded beads and trinkets for furs with them. We've been working very hard on our journals, and it shows by the good things that have happened to our colonies. We've enjoyed learning about Oregon from Mr. Emmons, and our maps have turned out well. Since there are only two days of school next week, there will be no spelling words or Excel homework. We were finally able to read with our second grade buddies in Mrs. Smith's class on Friday. We've missed quite a few Fridays, so we're glad to be able to spend time with them. Next week we'll be making our Hands of Love Trees. Every year, our school decorates paper trees with handprints out of wrapping paper (or any kind of paper), and then mail them to hospitalized children who won't be able to go home for Christmas. I'll be sending home fun work for students to do over Thanksgiving. This work is not required. It's just something you can tell your child to do when he/she starts complaining, "I'm bored!" Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
We started our Pilgrim Simulation Unit. So far, we've arrived to the New World earlier than the Pilgrims, and haven't lost as many people as they did in their journey. We've also started our Pilgrim logs, and are enjoying pretending to be like the Pilgrims. During subject switch, we've been in Mr. Emmon's room learning about Oregon, and it's place in the world and the United States. While we are there, Mrs. Funderburk has been teaching his class a Health unit. Congratulations to Jasmin, our Student of the Month for October! A HUGE THANK YOU to ALL you parents who came for conferences! We had a GREAT turn-out! Next week, we'll go back to Spelling, and the test will be on Friday. Also, Excel 9 is due Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, we'll start Excel 10, and that will be due Monday. We are only 20 points away from another Behavior Party! Have a wonderful weekend, as we remember our Veterans.
It's Halloween time! Thanks to everyone who contributed to our party! We had LOTS of yummy food. We finished up with our Laptop projects, and are looking forward to showing our families at conferences this Thursday and Friday. We are starting a Pilgrim simulation unit next week. I call it "Survivor New England." We learn about the Pilgrims and their struggle to the New World. Then, using this information, we attempt to do better then they did. We try to get more food, keep more people alive, build more homes, etc. Good things or bad things can happen to us according to our journal entries. This has always been so much fun! We'll do this the whole month of November. Congratulations to those students who met their AR goals this quarter. At the beginning of each quarter, students set goals for themselves as to how many book points they want to earn and what level they want to be at by the end of the quarter. Those students who met their goals attend a move and popcorn party this week. A big round of applause to the following students: Kasandra, Joshua, Auston, Rosa, Fatima, Hunter, Christopher, Luis, Riley, Sandra, and Gicelle. I am looking forward to meeting with all of you during conferences! Remember, only 1/2 day of school on Thursday, and no school Friday! Sincerely, Corinne Funderburk

We're in our last week of the quarter. Can you believe it? It has just flown by! Students should be close to reaching their AR goal. Remember, this AR grade is a part of their Lit Block grade. This week's spelling test will be next Monday, Oct. 30. Excel will be due Tuesday, Oct.31. Starting next week, we will be going to two Excels a week. The first one will be given Wednesday and due Friday. The second will be given Friday and due Tuesday. We are LOVING the laptops!! We'll be finishing our state report projects this week. The students have learned so much, and are catching on so quickly! I am so proud of all the work they've been doing. Students learned how to copy and paste information from the internet to their presentation slides. They know how to change the font, color, and background of their slides, too. We are excited to show our parents all that we have done! Congratulations to our MOST Award winners for the Fall Quarter: Trevor, Gicelle, and Kasandra. It was very difficult to choose only 3 students. Many are so deserving! Also, Jasmin received a MOST Award from Mr. Cody for PE, and Amie received one from Miss Reel for Music. Conferences are next week! I'm looking forward to meeting with all of you and discussing how your child is doing in school. Remember, you don't have to wait until conferences to ask questions or share concerns. Please feel free to call or e-mail any time.

What a fun week for us! Laptop Lab comes to Mrs. Funderburk's Class! McNary received a laptop lab this year, and we are taking full advantage of it. We will be during our first research project on them! We will be researching a state of our choice, and then create a Power Point Presentation with all the information. Parents will be able to view them at conferences! Students will learn how to locate, cut, and paste information and pictures as they learn about their states. It is an exciting project, and my previous classes have LOVED this project. Stacy Buglione from the Umatilla-Morrow County ESD will be coming to assist me with the project. I hope my students enjoyed their Friday off this past weekend. I went to a technology class that Friday, and am looking forward to sharing all that I have learned with them! I hope all you parents have received and reviewed your children's midterms. We have a few more weeks to go, and those who need to can improve their grades. Please fill out and return those conference forms for me. Those with siblings at our school have first priority. After that, I give priority to those who turned in their forms on time. So, please help me with this, so we don't have problems as the time draws near with getting the time of your choice. We earned ANOTHER behavior party! Students earned extra laptop time, and then had an ice cream party on Friday after lunch. What a GREAT class! Congratulations to Fernando, our September Student of the Month! The next time you hear from me, I'll let you know how the laptops are going! Thanks! Mrs. Funderburk

We enjoyed our first field trip of the year to Fort Walla Walla. We sure learned a lot, and enjoyed seeing what houses, farm equipment, schools, and clothes people wore from long ago looked like. Conferences are coming up November 2nd and 3rd. I will be sending home Midterms the week of Oct. 9-12. This will let you know how your child is doing so far this first quarter. Please sign and return. I hope this helps you, and if you have any questions, please feel free to call or e-mail me. We are going to UHS to see a REAL AUTHOR on October 11. His name is Bruce Coville. One of his most popular books is My Teacher is an Alien. This should be a wonderful experience for us all. Our Halloween Party will be Tuesday, Oct. 31. We'll have treat sign-ups soon. Remember: no face masks or toy guns or sword, or anything else that could distract others from learning. Well, this month will be over before we know it. Please let me know if there's any way I can help you with your child's learning and success in school.
